How do stories shape us and the roles we play? Should we resist stereotypes, no matter how seductive the game of seeing and being seen may be? What if the moth cannot resist the allure of the flame?
In GAZE, three women are exhibited in a gigantic terrarium. Trapped in a world where watching and being watched are the yardstick, they explore what role their bodies (still) can, want and are allowed to play in their quest for recognition.
In the visual dance-theatre performance GAZE, choreographer Laura Neyskens delivers a bold tribute to original sin and launches an attack on the hypocrisy of virtue. Together with dramaturg Raphaël Vandeweyer, she explores the power of our bodies. In a visually striking, anarchistic, and poetic way, they research how dominant stories shape us and determine our bodies and what impact this has in a world where, above all, we want to be seen and loved.
GAZE was created as part of Inter:Action, the new artist development program of Action Zoo Humain.

Laura Neyskens staat als 11-jarige voor het eerst professioneel op scène in Bernadetje (1996), een theaterproductie van Arne Sierens en Alain Platel waarmee ze heel Europa rond toert. Ze ontdekt dat dans en reizen haar grootste passie is en zet haar pad verder bij Platels hedendaags dansgezelschap Les Ballets C de la B (1998). Daar ontmoet ze Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, wat resulteert in een jarenlange samenwerking. Naast haar carrière als danseres in verscheidene van zijn producties (2000-2019), neemt ze ook grotere verantwoordelijkheden op als repetitor en choreograaf. Gedurende heel haar carrière ontwikkelt Laura een grote liefde voor Indiase dans. Zo richt ze mee het platform Maghenta (2017) op, waarmee ze Indiase dans toegankelijk maakt voor een breed publiek. Laura werkt geregeld samen met theatermaker Chokri Ben Chikha (2017-2023) waar ze de rol als regie-assistent en choreograaf op zich neemt. Momenteel werkt ze onder de vleugels van Inter:Action, het nieuwe-makerstraject van Action Zoo Humain.
Raphaël Vandeweyer behaalde een master in Dramaturgie aan de Universiteit Utrecht en een bachelor in Arts & Culture aan de Universiteit Maastricht. Na ervaring op te hebben gedaan bij verschillende culturele organisaties in Brussel, was hij lange tijd vast verbonden als dramaturg bij Action Zoo Humain. Momenteel werkt Raphaël als freelance dramaturg, schrijver en communicatieadviseur voor diverse kunstenaars en gezelschappen. Zo werkte hij onder meer samen met Muziektheater Transparant, Damaged Goods, kunstenaarscollectief Het Verbond (NL) en de jeugdtheaters Tint en fABULEUS en was hij betrokken bij projecten van kunstenaars als Chokri Ben Chikha, Maxime Waladi, Renée Goethijn, Jelle Stiphout, Jan Sobrie en Wouter Deltour.
